THESSALONIKI CULTURAL CROSSROADS

ARAB COMPOSERS AT THE CONCERT HALL

TCH - TSSO

Marcel Khalife
«Al Andalus», Concert  for oud and orchestra
Kamel Ferjani «Suite Tunisienne», Concert for an Arab musical ensemble and orchestra

The demand for a creative musical dialogue between East and West, tradition and modernity, is old and modern at the same time. Excellent composers worked with eagerness to present us very interesting samples. N. Skalkotas, M. Kalomiris, B. Bartók, S. Darwish, L. Janáček, H. Villa Lobos are among them.
The two magnificent Concerts of this event take us a step further. It is not just about an arrangement of traditional musical themes for a symphony orchestra, but about complete works that have been created to be played by traditional musical instruments.
In the first part the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra collaborates with the top Greek oudist Kyriakos Kalaitzidis in the Concert «Al Andalus» of the internationally famous Lebanese composer Marcel Khalife. In the second part, Kamel Ferjani’s «Tunisian Suite» reflects the influence of French romanticism to Maghreb’s music.
