Western art music, from the Middle Ages to contemporary avant-garde movements, constitutes a central component of global culture. However, critical music listening as a reflective and pedagogical practice is often overlooked in educational programmes. The Thessaloniki Concert Hall, as a leading cultural institution, provides the ideal setting for a conference that aspires to establish critical music listening as a shared space for dialogue and experience.
Aiming to highlight critical music listening as a fundamental process of understanding, creation and education, the conference is addressed to musicologists, music theorists and historians, educators in general and music education, students of music departments, soloists and conductors, as well as to a wider audience wishing to deepen their understanding of how we
listen to Western art music.
The conference combines experiential activities with a scientific and artistic programme (seminar workshops, round tables, presentations and lectures). The keynote speaker is Jody Kerchner, joined by distinguished scholars from Greek and international universities, representing a broad spectrum of fields—from music education, music pedagogy and music psychology to sound technology and neuroscience.
