Schubert’s Impromptus, Op. 90 (1827) combine lyrical depth with rigorous structural precision. Despite their improvisational title, they are meticulously crafted works — from the stormy opening in C minor, to the lyrical G major depression and the virtuoso finale in A depression. Each piece reveals, in a subtle but intense way, Schubert’s characteristic melancholy and charm.
Chaminade’s Méditation and Autrefois illuminate her lyrical genius and her distinctive romantic language. With subtle nuances and nostalgic charm, these works reposition Chaminade as a distinct and important voice of Romanticism.
Frédéric Chopin’s Ballade No. 4 (1842) is considered the most complex and structurally sophisticated of the four. Two contrasting musical themes are woven into a dramatic narrative, which gradually develops until it culminates in a dazzling, emotionally charged climax.
