G. Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C-Sharp Minor
The concert programme features works by two leading exponents of the late romantic period: Strauss' Four Last Songs can be described as his musical legacy. His son had insisted that he write one last important work, and Joseph von Eichendorff's poem Im Abendrot provided the necessary creative spark.
The Fifth Symphony is the first major work of Mahler's late period. With its profusion of intense and conflicting emotions it is markedly different from the first four Symphonies where metaphysical anxieties give way to more 'earthly longing'.
