“Nation Awakening: PAVLOS MELAS” is the title of the deluxe edition of the publication of the Foundation for the Museum of Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia (FMMS), which is presented to the general public for the first time. It is a rare compilation of historical evidence comprising more than a hundred condolence letters which the families Mela and Dragoumi received when the news of the untimely death of the Macedonian warrior Pavlos Melas became known. His sacrifice, the scale of his heroic death and the aftermath of the legend of Melas are presented through unique letters of important personalities of the time, including Konstantinos Mazarakis - Ainian, Germanos Karavangelis, Lakis Pyrzas, Athanasios Exadaktylos Louise Riencourt, Ekaterini Laskaridou and Sofia Trikoupi. The publication also includes resolutions of municipalities, communities, companies and a variety of associations of the free, enslaved and diasporic Hellenism of the early 20th century. These documents highlight the symbolic dimension of Melas' sacrifice, a heroic act that made the Macedonian Question a national affair.
The archival material was donated to the Museum by his granddaughter, Mrs. Natalia Ioannidi, for its scientific promotion and utilization. The publication was made on the initiative of the Ministry of National Defence, while the cost of the publication was borne by the Civil Non-Profit Company of Drama KYKLOPS.
