G.B. Pergolesi: Stabat Mater

Stabat Mater is a medieval Latin hymn to the Virgin Mary dating back to the 13th century, describing her grief and sorrow under the Cross. The title stems from the first verse of the poem ("Stabat Mater Dolorosa ..." - "The Mother was devastated ..."). The work was set to music by many composers, including the Italian Giovanni Pergolesi in 1736, shortly before his death. Stabat Mater is one of his most well-known and popular religious works. Characteristically, Jean-Jacques Rousseau described his introduction as "the most perfect and fascinating duet ever written by any composer". Multiple other composers worked on it, such as Giovanni Paizielo who expanded the orchestral accompaniment and Joseph Eimbler who added a choir to replace some of the duets, while Bach's "Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden" cantata was subsequently composed using the then popular technique of "parody", which signifies that the composition is based on the pre-existing work of Pergolesi.
