Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Violin Concerto in D major, op. 61
On occasion of the National Remembrance Day of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Holocaust Heroes, the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Concert Hall and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra co-organise a tribute concert with guest one of the greatest violinists of our time, virtuoso Gil Shaham, who joins with the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra under the musical direction of the artistic director Zoi Tsokanou.
The programme begins with Psalm 22, performed in Judaeo-Spanish by the soprano Mariangela Chatzistamatiou, followed by the captivating Adagio for Strings by Barber, the most popular American symphonic work which reverently spreads serenity and bliss, creating a sense of elevation in the sky.
Gil Shaham performs the majestic Violin Concerto by Beethoven, perhaps the most important work of its kind. A witty creation of the leading composer that adds lyricism to his performances in order to express high ideals and reflect on Eros, Freedom and Democracy.
