LITO THOMOU & ERATO ALAKIOZIDOU: ÁSTOR PIAZZOLLA FOR TWO PIANOS
Organizer: THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL
A product and emblem of the popular culture of Buenos Aires, tango embodied the sensuality, drama, passion and melancholy of Argentine music since the late 19th century. In the mid-1940s, the musical genius of Astor Piazzolla brought about a groundbreaking fusion of Argentine tango with elements of jazz and classical music, giving rise to what became internationally known as Nuevo Tango (new tango). In 1996, the award-winning composer Pablo Ziegler, Piazzolla’s longtime pianist for over a decade and a distinguished exponent of Nuevo Tango, arranged twelve of Piazzolla’s tangos for two pianos.
Drawing on these arrangements by Ziegler, Lito Thomou and Erato Alakiozidou take us on a journey into the captivating world of Astor Piazzolla, in a programme that combines the explosive energy of tango with the virtuosity of the piano. The two acclaimed pianists create a dialogue of intensity and sensitivity, where the rhythm of tango is transformed into a contemporary two-piano soundscape, rich in colour, dynamism and emotion.
