THESSALONIKI STATE ORCHESTRA IN COLLABORATION WITH THE THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL, AS PART OF THE 60TH DIMITRIA
PROGRAMME
R. Wagner: Introduction from the opera Tannhäuser
L. v. Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D major, opus 61
R. Strauss: Thus Spoke Zarathustra, opus 30
The Thessaloniki Concert Hall honours the memory of the great violinist and conductor Kosmas Galileas, with a tribute that will include works by Wagner, Beethoven and Richard Strauss. The concert is conducted by Leo McFall, while the Bulgarian violinist Albena Danailova is a special guest.
Albena Danailova was the first woman to occupy the position of principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, a musical ensemble with deeply rooted conservative traditions that for decades was inaccessible to female musicians. In 2008, after a demanding competition and a two-year probationary period, she managed to overturn this tradition, confirming her undeniable talent and giving the international music scene her unique, recognizable sound.
In Thessaloniki, we will enjoy it live for the first time, in a concert of memory and honour that highlights the contribution of Kosmas Galileas as a violinist and conductor.
