W. A. Mozart: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466
R. Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra, Tone Poem For Large Orchestra, Op. 30
Chinese virtuoso Hao Yilei, winner of the ''Giorgos Thymis'' International Piano Competition, 2017, performs the all-time favourite of Mozart's 23 Piano Concertos. It is a rare moment indeed when Mozart leaves a chink in his classic perfection allowing some emotional elements to creep in, thus heralding the dawn of the Romantic movement.
Strauss wrote the Also sprach Zarathustra tone poem drawing inspiration from Nietzsche's philosophical work of the same name, not however with the intention of portraying it in music; more probably by referring to it, he wished to make a personal comment while at the same time highlighting the optimism of his generation on the threshold of the 20th century.
