THESSALONIKI STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: MAHLER'S 4th SYMPHONY

IN COOPERATION WITH THE THESSALONIKI STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

G. Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G major
Mahler’s musical compositions are characterised by unusual emotional intensity and deep metaphysical anxiety. His 4th Symphony is considered to be the most accessible and popular with the broader public, maybe because the composer focuses on the rich melodies rather than his persistent quest for answers regarding life after death. The unusual finale of the symphony describes the sky as seen through the eyes of a child. This is the last Symphony in which he incorporates tunes of songs he wrote for the traditional folk poems of Des Knaben Wunderhorn Collection, which had been orally handed down through the centuries and became the sublime crown of romantic nationalism throughout the German-speaking world, with the blessings of Goethe himself.
