Chamber music concert for flute and piano with Ioanna Athanasaki on flute and Marilena Liakopoulou on piano, dedicated to female composers as part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day.
Works selected from the French repertoire of the 19th and early 20th centuries, written exclusively by female composers, a term officially recognized by the French Academy in 1904.
Does music have a gender? As in the other arts – literature, painting – so in music too, categorizations and social inequalities kept female artists on the margins. In a male-dominated era, however, they managed to become accepted, to win important awards (Lili Boulanger was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome in 1913) and to be internationally acclaimed.
This is a small tribute to the women whose work still remains less known in the music world yet who deserve an important place in the history of French music.
