THE UNIVERSITY OF MACEDONIA AT THE CONCERT HALL

DMSA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHOIR: VIVA CLASSICA

Organizer: TCH IN COOPERATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC SCIENCE & ART (DMSA) OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MACEDONIA
The Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the DMSA of the University of Macedonia take you on a journey through the world of classical music, with a programme that is dominated by Joseph Haydn, father of the symphony and one of the greatest composers of his time. Students from the DMSA who have distinguished themselves in the annual performance competition will participate in the concert.
The concert opens with the first movement of Haydn’s magnificent Cello Concerto No 1, one of the most famous cello concertos, which demonstrates the full virtuosity of the instrument, in a continuous conversation with the orchestra (soloist: Efstratia Chaloulakou). It continues with the classical-style first movement of Gluck’s Flute Concerto, which showcases the delicate melodic lines of the flute, demanding technical excellence from the performer (soloist: Rafailia-Eirini Kontou). Bat Papi for symphony orchestra was written by Georgios Magalios, who is specializing in composition, as the first part of a degree competition recital and the theme of which is Batman’s grandfather! This is followed by the astonishingly beautiful first movement of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2, which combines the lyrical joy of the piano with a particularly symphonic approach to the orchestra (soloist: Tatiana Nikolopoulou).
The second half of the concert includes the choral piece Jesus bleibet meine Freude from Bach’s cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben and the Symphony No 104 in D major, the last that Haydn wrote when, at the age of 59, he left the Esterhazy court and settled in London. The final movement of this work is a benchmark of the symphonic repertoire for subsequent composers even today.
