ALBAN BERG: WOZZECK

Organizer: TCH WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE ANTENNA GROUP

Opera in three acts, libretto by Alban Berg
With Greek subtitles
Estimated run time 1 hour & 45 minutes
William Kentridge directs Alban Berg’s expressionist masterpiece Wozzeck, one of the major works of the 20th century, which is best known for its superb score and the intense emotions it creates. Berg completed his opera in the aftermath of the First World War, presenting the dark wanderings of a soldier who has been defeated by the evil in society. Kentridge places the action within a nightmare set filled with ruins, collapsing stairs, crumbling bridges and broken furniture. The opera is based on the play Woyzeck by Georg Büchner, with a slight variation in the name of the main character.
Peter Mattei interprets the role of Wozzeck for the first time, with Elza van den Heever as Marie, the mother of his child. Wozzeck’s nightmares are performed by Christopher Ventris as the Drum-Major, Gerhard Siegel as the Captain and Christian Van Horn as the Doctor. Andrew Staples makes his Met debut as Andres.
A co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Opera Australia and the Salzburg Festival, where it was first performed in 2017 to rave reviews.
