Giuseppe Verdi: La Traviata, op.8- 29
The program presents only original pieces for guitar and focuses on periods "classic" and "romantic" in the history of literature for guitar, appreciable in this occasion in an original instrument of the time (a French guitar Mirecourt school).
Mauro Giuliani and Ferdinando Carulli fully represent the 19th century Italian classic period but, unable to assert itself at home because of the dominio of opera and the consequent lack of interest in instrumental music, were forced to seek his fortune in Vienna and Paris, respectively, at that time elected by many composers such as the European capitals of music.
By Giuliani you will hear the Grand Overture, the orchestral-inspired composition where the composer is enhanced through entire sections addressed to pure instrumental virtuosity, while by the composer Carulli the Six Andanti op.320, much more intimate work and quiet that, cause of its beauty and compositional quality, is still unfairly and little valued by the interpreters.
In the second part a taste of romantic atmosphere with two compositions by Johann Kaspar Mertz, worthy representative of the guitar romance, by many identified with the dark period of the instrument but that, on the contrary, and as we will hear, gave to the original repertoire pages of authentic thickness and musical value; the languid and touching Elegy, characterized by rhythmic contrasts agogic related to emotional sphere, and a paraphrase in the form of pot-pourri of the famous La Traviata composed by Verdi, a tribute to Italy and its large and prolific operatic tradition.
