The Musicircus - Open Air 2011, a creation of the American avant-garde composer John Cage, is a big open and free entrance event, where a large number of musical ensembles interact in order to create random sounds and synchronisms.
The first Musicircus (with completely no sheet music), took place at the University of Illinois in 1967. Cage invited many artists to take part in a happening without an already determined text. Every performer “owned” a part of the hall and could perform the texts and actions he liked in a specific time frame. From the very first minute of the event, the public could wander around without restraint and approach the artist or the spectacle they liked, or they could stand at various places of the hall in order to derive a different acoustic or visual impression – mixture of the random, natural coexistence of different sounds, movements and spectacles. The experiment was an unprecedented success. The next 25 years dozens Musicircus took place, not only in America but also in the most important cultural centers of the world.
The Musicircus will be presented in the courtyard and around the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, as well as in selected areas of the building Β.
The event will be completed with a concert of the City of Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra.
