Socrates Sinopoulos’ tunes, combined with the Quartet’s improvisations, create a magic atmosphere filled with emotions and echoes from the past.
The Quartet was created in 2011. Its initial works were adaptations of musical traditional themes from the broader Greek area and soon the members focused on original works composed by Socrates Sinopoulos. This material was published by ‘ECM’ records and titled Eight Winds (‘ECM 2407’), the producer being Manfred Eicher; it was received with excellent reviews the world over.
“These are just some black and white musical sketches,” as Socrates Sinopoulos says, “which we colour in, in a different manner every time. The eight Winds symbolise the various international or local musical styles and trends. What we are after, thought, is letting yourself drift away, in the most charming or adventurous journey, but also to feel the wind standing still, in your own place, in the dead calm.”
