Fani Antonelou
Soprano
The soprano Fanie Antonelou has been awarded the Grand Prix Maria Callas of the Maria Callas International Competition in Athens in the category oratorio/lied and the Frankfurt Mendelssohn-Prize. She was finalist at the Lied-competition “Schubert und die Musik der Moderne” in Graz.
She studied voice, opera and lied at the Stuttgart School of Music, as well as Early Music at the School of Music Trossingen in Germany. Her vocal repertoire spans from medieval and early Baroque music to contemporary works, supported by a soprano voice distinguished by its singular timbre and refined elegance.
Sie has made guest appearances at Stuttgart State Opera, the Perm Opera House, as well as at festivals including the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad, the Handel Festival in Halle, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and the Lucerne Festival. Current and recent engagements include among others Haydn’s Creation at Stuttgart Liederhalle, Bach’s Mass in b with Munich Bach Choir in Munich Residence, Bach’s Cantatas at Thomas Church in Leipzig, and Orff’s Carmina burana with Stuttgart Oratorio Choir. With MusicAeterna under Teodor Currentzis she sang the soprano part in Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem at Baden-Baden Festival, with ensemble Ex silentio Handel cantatas at Göttingen Handel Festival. She acted and sang at the short film Exodion on composition for soprano and organ by composer Calliopi Tsoupaki. She performed György Kurtág’s Kafka-Fragmente for soprano and violin in a production by Zero Point Theater Company at Attis Theater.
Her discography includes the role of Susanna (Mozart, Le nozze di Figaro) under the direction of Currentzis (Sony Classical), Brahms’ A German Requiem (London version) with conductor Jochen Arnold (Organum Classics), Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine with Ensemble La Fenice (Ligia), Music of the Troubadours of Thessaloniki, and works from Cyprus Codex with Ensemble Ex Silentio (Nefeli Editions). Her first solo CD Affinities (BIS Records) features songs by Greek and German composers of the early 20th century, while her most recent recording Goethe Lieder (Coviello Classics) on historical fortepianos.
