LENIA ZAFEIROPOULOU – NIKOS CHRISTODOULOU
BEETHOVEN AND SCHUBERT: FROM POETRY TO MUSIC

Organizer: THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL
The distinguished mezzo-soprano Lenia Zafeiropoulou and conductor-composer and pianist Nikos Christodoulou present a tribute to the Lied, centred on Franz Schubert’s masterful cycle of fourteen songs, Swan Song, which constitute Schubert’s last compositions.
The recital opens with three significant songs by Ludwig van Beethoven, to whom Schubert had a profound creative connection, particularly in the final year of his short life. In all but one of the songs in Swan Song, the poetic idea of distant beloved figures appears in various forms. The same idea can be traced in two of Beethoven’s three songs, as well as in the poetry of Kostas Karyotakis set to music in the song cycle by Nikos Christodoulou, which opens the programme.
