NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE
NOЁL COWARD: PRESENT LAUGHTER (recorded)
Organizer: TCH WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE ANTENNA GROUP
As he prepares to embark on an overseas tour to Africa, star actor Garry Essendine’s colourful life is in danger of spiralling out of control. Over two wild days, Garry, who is already engulfed by a midlife crisis, will find himself in a chaotic whirlwind of love, sex and panic. His character is a caricature of Coward himself, as the author confessed.
Matthew Warchus directs Andrew Scott (Sherlock, BBC) in Noël Coward’s provocative comedy Present Laughter (1939). The title comes from the song O mistress mine from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, which urges us to seize the day: “present mirth hath present laughter”.
