The Art of Fugue in the art of movement

J.S. Bach's The Art of Fugue, a collection of 14 fugues and 4 canons on a single subject, is one of the greatest landmarks in the history of Western classical music. The composition primarily explores polyphony and the complexity of the individual works gradually increases presenting the subject in single, double and triple fugues. The last fugue remained unfinished, but it is thought that it would probably have been a quadruple fugue. The work was not written for any specific instruments, thus encouraging a lasting, timeless experimentation with various combinations of different ones. This performance proposes an original combination with alto flute, cello and piano.
Whilst the music is being played, selected Tai Chi martial art moves will be performed all the time on stage. The intimacy, polyphony and endless flow of the musical text unfold in the space and are expressed by the human body in a counterpoint with, as a common thread, the deeply spiritual and physical balance.
The first part of the 2nd Disquieted Sounds Festival took part on 9 & 11 November 2018.
