Alongside what, according to many, is the greatest symphony of all time, Beethoven's Ninth (Ode to Joy), and also behind the imaginative variations by Saint-Saëns, is the dominant figure of the “emperor of the piano”, Franz Liszt, who met Beethoven as a child and years later guided Saint-Saëns in his compositions. By transcribing the Ninth Symphony for two pianos, Liszt highlighted its endless drama in a unique way, through the instrument's timbre and expressive power. The spirit of Liszt's mastery also governs the demanding, imaginative variations of Saint-Saëns on a short theme from Beethoven's Sonata No. 18.
