Dimitris Mystakidis, in a solo performance, covers and performs - using unique string plucking technique - rembetiko songs that were only released and played live in America by Greek immigrant musicians.
The pain of separation, the long and arduous journey to America, the struggle to survive and adapt, marginalisation, illegal activities, homesickness and the dream of returning home, flicker through the songs like cinematic images. Their music, simple yet created with skill, spells out heartache, recalls memories and creates emotion.
The audiovisual material that accompanies the performance reminds one that history repeats itself. It highlights the experiences and emotions born in every immigrant, in all peoples.
