THESSALONIKI STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: BEETHOVEN CYCLE - EUROPE DAY

T.C.H. IN CO-OPERATION WITH THESSALONIKI STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No 9 in D minor, Op. 125
On 9 May 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman called upon France, Germany and other countries to unite their coal and steel production as “the first concrete foundation of a European federation”. The ‘Schuman Declaration’, as it has come to be known, marked the beginning of the creation of the present-day European Union and 9 May was named as ‘Europe Day’, celebrated in all European countries with various events.
The best way to celebrate this anniversary is the presentation of Beethoven's colossal 9th Symphony, culminating in the glorious Hymn to Joy (An die Freude), which was established in 1985 as the official ‘Anthem of Europe’.
