Germán Villar

Spanish tenor Germán Villar was born in Valencia and started his musical education with Inés Ribanedeira in Madrid. 1995 he joined the Joaquim Rodrigo Conservatory in Valencia, where he finished his studies with Ana Luisa Chova. In 2000 he took part in the Young Artist Program of the Metropolitan Opera in New York and worked with renowned teachers such as Trish McCaffree, Renata Scotto and Pierre Vallet. The following year he made his stage debut singing Alfredo in La Traviata. In 2002 he won three awards at the Francisco-Vinas-Competition in Barcelona and joined the ensemble at the Stadttheater Giessen/ Germany, where he successfully performed a number of prestigious roles, such as Pollione, Pinkerton, Lenskij and Mitch in the German premiere of André Previns A streetcar named desire.
Meanwhile the artist has made a splendid reputation as one of the leading tenors of the young generation. Due to his outstanding musicality and attractive stage appearance he is predestinated for the major tenor roles of the Italian and French repertoire. In addition to the already mentioned characters his repertoire includes Cavaradossi, Don José, Luigi in Il tabarro und Lyonel in Martha as well as a number of major roles in Spanish operas and zarzuelas. In early 2007 he appeared as Don José in several Italian opera houses and gave concerts in Copenhagen. He sang next to Plácido Domingo the role of Christian in Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac at the Palau de la Musica in his native Valencia and Froh in Wagner’s Das Rheingold conducted by Zubin Mehta in Valencia and Florence. In January 2008 he made his debut at La Scala, again with Cyrano de Bergerac followed by Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Greek National Opera in Athens. In summer 2008 he sang with tremendous success his first Siegmund in Die Walküre at the Freiburg Opera and appeared as Don José at the San Sebastian Festival in Spain. In 2009 he made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Respighi’s Marie Victoire and sangs his first Adorno in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra in Freiburg. In 2010 he celebrated a great success with Carmen in Cologne and Barcelona and sang several new productions in Freiburg, amongst which Adriana Lecouvreur and Un ballo in maschera.
