TRIBUTE TO NIKOS SKALKOTTAS: (RE)DISCOVERING SKALKOTTAS

TCH IN COOPERATION WITH THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC STUDIES, ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI
Who was Nikos Skalkottas? Which is his music? Why, if he was creatively prolific until his premature and sudden death in 1949 did he only hear the largest part of his work in his head and not performed live? Why do we mainly know his Greek dances when he belonged to one of the most modernist artistic groups of the 20th century? What meanings did his music transmit after his death, in post-war Greece and what meanings does it have today?
In this two-day tribute by the Thessaloniki  Concert Hall, as part of the Skalkottas Year on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of his death, eight musicologists and interpreters will give possible answers to these and other questions, with lectures addressed to everyone. Also for the first time, there will be two workshops centred on an analysis and interpretation of his music. The tribute concert will include the world’s first live by broadcast of the suite Yhe Gnomes by Lorenta Ramou as well as interpretations of his works for violin by Antonis Sousamoglou.
