Ian McKellen reigns supreme in this triumphant production!” - Daily Telegraph

Two aging fathers - one a King, one his courtier - reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends. NT Live presents a contemporary retelling of King Lear, a play that is tender and violent, moving and shocking.
Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear was staged to great acclaim at the Duke of York’s Theatre, by Chichester Festival Theatre in 2017. The sold-out production, which wowed audiences and received 5-star reviews, was recorded during limited performances in the West End. Jonathan Munby’s direction intelligently portrays this classic Shakespearian play with ‘exceptional clarity’ in a contemporary and innovative narrative that ‘pulses with life and energy’ (The Times). Lear is ‘emotionally embodied’ by Ian Mckellen, the imposing Gandalf of Lord of the Rings.
