"I was born in France to a French father and Greek mother. My grandparents only let them get married on three conditions: the children were to be baptised in the Greek Orthodox church, they should go to Greece every year and they would have to speak Greek. So, I was baptised in the orthodox Christian faith, went to Greece every summer and speak Greek, although not very well. This sad fact, of not being able to speak my mother tongue, made me want talk to my mother to try to understand why she had excluded me from her Greek 'world'.
A story was put together which developed into a myth created for the theatre. It is the story of a woman, a Greek woman, a Greek-French woman. She isn't first one then the other, she is both at the same time. She is Greek in 1965 in Thessaloniki and French in 1968 in Paris. She doesn't have any particular accent, or anything else reminiscent of her origins, she has wiped away every trace.
But why?
These questions naturally spring to mind when approaching the subject of foreign climes, language, memory. What do we leave behind us when we go away? What do we abandon? What part of us remains far away from us?
