D. Shostakovich: The Festive Overture in A Major, Op. 96
G. Kancheli: Valse Boston
D. Shostakovich: Symphony No. 11 in G Minor
Giya Kancheli is a contemporary Georgian composer who has been characterised as “an ascetic with the temperament of a maximalist; a restrained Vesuvius”. The Valse Boston is one of his most characteristic compositions. It is reminiscent of a waltz danced slowly in a dream. The Festive Overture is an enthusiastic work written by Shostakovich for the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution and his Symphony No. 11, also known as The year 1905, relates to the Russian Revolution of that year which led to a series of reforms in imperial Russia.
