LECTURE: JUHANI PALLASMAA - ART AND ARCHITECTURE AS EXPERIENCE: THE INTELLECTUAL REALITY OF ART

T.C.H.
One of the most important individuals in world architecture, Finn Juhani Pallasmaa (born 1936), is coming to Thessaloniki for the first time as a guest of the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. His lecture will be a unique opportunity to become acquainted with his multifaceted work, which extends from architecture and urban planning to industrial and graphic design.
Pallasmaa started from rationalism, standardisation, and prefabrication, influenced by Japanese architecture and the work of Mies van der Rohe. However, his ideas changed over time. After a two-year stay in Africa (1972-74) he turned more to phenomenology, a type of architecture that places greater emphasis on experience, the senses and the interaction of people with constructed space.
He focused on his composition work and was established as a contemporary architecture theoretician, while he achieved a noteworthy dissemination of his ideas through teaching and various other positions. Specifically, he was the Rector of the Institute of Industrial Design, Helsinki (1970-72), Associate Professor at the University of Haile Selassie in Addis Ababa (1972-74), Director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture (1978-83), State Artist Professor (1983-88), and Professor and Dean of the School of Architecture, Helsinki University of Technology (1991-97). He was a visiting professor at many universities in the USA, while he also taught at many institutions in America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. He has published more than 60 books and 400 essays, which have been translated into 36 languages - some of the most well known ones are: Encounters: Architectural Essays 1 (2005) and 2 (2012), Understanding Architecture (2012), The Embodied Image (2011), The Thinking Hand (2009), The Architecture of Image: existential space in cinema (1998), The Eyes of the Skin (1995 and 2012) and Animal Architecture (1995). The exhibitions of Finnish architecture, urban planning, and visual arts that he organised and curated Director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture were presented in more than 30 countries.
