T.C.H. - CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY IN THESSALONIKI
‘Istanbul’ Historic Turkish Music Ensemble of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism was founded in 1991, in order to make possible the interpretation and promotion of classical Turkish music, specifically Sufi and Mehter (Ottoman military music) music, which are some of the most important cultural values in Turkey. The Ensemble, which functions as two groups, Sufi and Mehter, interpret classic works that were played by the Ottoman military band (until it was disbanded in 1826, along with the ‘Yeniçeri Ocagi’) and the lodges (which were shut down in 1925). Along with the classical pieces that have survived to this day, we will also hear new pieces that the Ensemble has added to its repertoire.
‘Istanbul’ Historic Turkish Music Ensemble of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism continues to research and study interpretation, with the knowledge of how important their contribution is to the presentation of Turkish music, the roots of which are lost in the depths of History. Its unique style and characteristics have enchanted art lovers worldwide and its promotion is an important legacy for generations to come.
