THESSALONIKI STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: WORKS BY PENDERECKI & BARTOK

IN COOPERATION WITH THE THESSALONIKI STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

K. Penderecki: Concerto for flute and chamber orchestra
B. Bartók: Concerto for orchestra, SZ. 116, BB 123
Krzysztof Penderecki is a contemporary Polish composer and academic tutor, with a wealth of works; he has received numerous awards in his country and internationally. Concerto for flute and chamber orchestra is an impressive piece of music, demanding special virtuosity from the soloist and the string instruments of the chamber orchestra. Another particularly demanding work is Bartók’s Concerto for orchestra, which expects solos from all orchestra instruments and attributes a new meaning to the concept of a ‘Concerto’. Bartók combines elements from Bach to Schoenberg, incorporating, as always, features of traditional Hungarian music.
