Umberto Primo’s Pupils
A true story dedicated to memory of the Holocaust

Thessaloniki, June 2003 Basement of the building of the Italian Institute, formerly the ‘Umberto Primo’ Italian School. The wind makes a piece of paper stick on the chest of Antonio Crescenzi and the story unravels through the composition titled: “One of the best memories of my life’, by pupil Alberto Modiano, December 1941.
School Year: 1941-42, ‘Umberto Primo’ Italian School At the beginning of the school year, the tutor receives his pupils, 5 boys and 4 girls. They assemble in the classroom without knowing this is to be their final school year. Hopes, ideas, adolescent concerns, dreams of a class of Jewish children come to life before the eyes of the audience.
The children read their compositions, discuss, fall in love, are taught and teach us a lesson for life: What happened should never happen again.
