November sees a smaller, select group of Europe’s finest young musicians return to Thessaloniki. Building upon a hugely successful spring residency and developing the ‘Adopt and Orchestra’ project, the European Union Youth Orchestra will create an alternative residency format based around chamber music groups. The EUYO is establishing a strong, ‘extended family’ connection with Thessaloniki, its residents, and its concert hall. By working alongside four local artists, EUYO players will simultaneously disseminate their experience and musicianship, but also and more importantly, be exposed to different musical methodologies and an unfamiliar cultural approach to performance art. The fruit of this collaboration will reveal itself through the creation of the Mendelssohn Octet. Furthermore, to sustain a broad reach and to raise awareness of European excellence in classical music, the EUYO will perform and engage with new audiences in a city-wide campaign to promote the genre. Hospitals, schools and children’s homes will become the kitchens of this classical culinary experience – where the final product will be a multi-cultural dish of inspiration.
