T.C.H.

L.v. Beethoven: “Razumovsky” String Quartet in F major, Op. 59, No 1
A. Dvořák: Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81
The Quartet, Op. 59, No 1 is the first of the Three Quartets Beethoven composed in 1806 commissioned by the Russian Ambassador to Vienna, Count and later Prince Andreas Razumovsky. The “Razumovsky” pieces are the first String Quartets of the composer’s second period and they were published in Vienna in 1808. Beethoven used typical Russian themes to honour the Russian diplomat.
The composition of Piano Quintet No. 2, Op. 81 started in an effort by Dvořák to improve Quintet Op. 5, which had left him unsatisfied. He then decided to compose a completely new work, without making any reference to the previous quintet. In this new Quintet the composer combines his personal style with traditional Czech features.
