SOPHIA KARAKANTZA: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

T.C.H. - STATE CONSERVATORY OF THESSALONIKI
S.C.T. Performance of Jesus Christ Superstar is based on the famous rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The opera recounts the events in the last week of Christ’s life in its own way. Written in the early 70s, it carries with it the atmosphere of the times and is affected by the activity of major political and social movements, and their confrontation with all forms of authority.
From this aspect, Jesus is presented as the leader of a peaceful movement that represents the force of social change, based on a dogma of Love and Acceptance of diversity, teaching tolerance and solidarity. Judas questions the power of this peaceful process, believing that without the polemics of violence the movement will be destroyed or will be taken over by the representatives of authority, who have historically taken advantage of and controlled public opinion. Priests Caiaphas and Annas, recognising the power of the subversion that could be caused by a powerful social movement, take advantage of Judas’ doubts and, knowing full well the games of power and the fragile dynamics of the masses, turn the followers into enemies, ultimately leading Jesus to his death.
Adapted for a percussion orchestra by Alexandros Ioannou (percussion professor at S.C.T.), the work has been modernised in a unique performance of new timbres that imbue it with a special ‘freshness’.
It was performed on 18-21 March 2016 in the framework of an educational process for the students at S.C.T., and for the creation of a youth music scene for the musical and theatrical youth of Thessaloniki.
