STARS OF MUSIC & CINEMA: HOMAGE TO OSCAR AWARDS FOR SONGS

IN COOPERATION WITH THE “FRIENDS OF MUSIC OF THESSALONIKI”
A homage to the songs that received Oscar Awards from 1934 to1960 will be presented at Thessaloniki Concert Hall by journalist Lefteris Kongalidis. Although Oscars were awarded as early as 1929, the award for the best film song for the year was launched in 1934.
The programme prepared by the journalist with material from his personal archives, presents on the big screen all the songs that received an Oscar award from 1934 up to 1960, a total of 26 compositions, most of which became major record hits in various versions.
The homage ends with the award of 1960 due to time limits, but also because this was the year when The Children of Pireaus [Ta paidia tou Pirea], sung by Melina Merkouri in Never on Sunday, brings the Oscar for the best film song to Greece and Manos Hatzidakis.
There will also be another 25 awarded songs sung by Frank Sinatra, Louis Zourdan, Doris Day, ‘Tex’ Ritter, Bing Crosby, Esther Williams, Ricardo Montalbán, ‘Bob’ Hope, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Alice Faye, etc.
In 1934 the Oscar Award went to The Continental which lasts for 8 minutes and 22 seconds, danced to by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
The songs have been taken from the original picture material and last as long as they do in the film.
